That figure counts schools the federal release lists as open or newly opened; it is not the number of school buildings, and it is not the number of campuses a district may run under one record. Does this include private schools?
No. The Common Core of Data is a census of public elementary and secondary schools. Private schools are collected separately, in the Private School Universe Survey, and are not counted here.
Why might this differ from a figure the state publishes?
The federal release has its own collection date and its own definition of an open school. A state count taken on a different date, or counting campuses rather than school records, will not match line for line.
Method and sources
Every figure on this page is a census over the 2023-24 Common Core of Data, published by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. The counts by level, type and charter status are a census over the school directory: each record is placed in the group its own field names, and a record whose field is blank is counted in the total but in no group. That is why the group counts can sum to less than the total and are not forced to match it. No figure here is imputed, and where a count excludes records the number excluded is on the page.
