What does full-time equivalent mean?
It converts part-time positions into whole ones: two teachers each working half a timetable are reported as one FTE. It is therefore lower than a headcount of people employed.
Is the student-teacher ratio the same as class size?
No, and the difference is large. The ratio divides all students by all teaching FTE, including staff who do not hold a class of their own. Average class size is usually higher than the ratio.
Method and sources
Every figure on this page is a census over the 2023-24 Common Core of Data, published by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. The staffing total covers only schools with a published teacher figure, and the ratio uses the same two sums shown on this page so it can be checked. Schools missing either field are excluded from that field's total, never imputed. No figure here is imputed, and where a count excludes records the number excluded is on the page.
